Located about 20 minutes southwest of downtown Dallas at 7171 Mountain Creek Parkway, Cedar Ridge Preserve is a 600-acre nature sanctuary featuring nearly 9 miles of hiking trails within the White Rock Escarpment. Once known as the Dallas Nature Center, it is now managed jointly by the City of Dallas, Dallas County, and Audubon Dallas, preserving native woodlands and prairie landscapes.

A History of Conservation

Starting in 1975, the Greenhills Foundation established the Dallas Nature Center on 26 acres. Over the following decades, Dallas County and the City of Dallas expanded the preserve. Since 2003, Audubon Dallas has cared for the preserve under a local charter, welcoming visitors and leading conservation efforts focused on native plants, wildlife, and habitat restoration.

Trails and Wildlife

Visitors can enjoy about 9 miles of well-maintained dirt trails, with elevations rising to 755 feet above sea level. Trails vary from easy loops like Possumhaw to the more challenging Cedar Brake and Outer Loop, which provide rugged terrain and scenic overlooks. The preserve supports diverse wildlife, including deer, lizards, butterflies, and more than 200 bird species—among them the rare black-capped vireo. Amenities include restrooms, an education building, picnic tables, and benches.
